Event Description
National Ballet of Ukraine from the Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet Theatre on an extraordinary US tour. Known as one of the world’s premier ballet companies, the National Ballet of Ukraine is embarking on its first US tour since Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. This tour is officially endorsed by the Ukrainian government. For the first time, American audiences will have the unique opportunity to experience this world-class ballet company. Unlike other tours that may feature dancers under a misleading Ukrainian company name, this tour brings the official National Ballet company directly from Kyiv, Ukraine.
The ballet production is a grand celebration of Ukraine’s rich cultural heritage that promises to captivate audiences. The tour travels with a full LED wall utilizing immersion 3D technology for select portions of the program. The performances will include excerpts from some of the world’s most celebrated ballets, such as “Giselle” and “Don Quixote,” along with modern compositions. Additionally, the show will highlight Ukrainian culture through vibrant traditional folk dances. The tour will also feature a special guest appearance by the renowned Ukrainian/Canadian folk dance group, Shumka.
The National Ballet of Ukraine has performed across the globe, upholding the highest standards of the national and classical repertoire for the Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet Theatre. The title of the show, “Nadiya Ukraine,” means “Hope of Ukraine” in Ukrainian, symbolizing the hope and resilience of Ukraine brought to American cities.
The National Ballet of Ukraine, comprised of 150 dancers, 26 of whom will be part of the US tour. Before the outbreak of war in February 2022, the company staged 16 productions a month at the Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet Theatre. Today, the number of productions depends on the circumstances of the conflict and audiences are limited to 400 people, which is the capacity of the bomb shelter underneath the theatre.
Don’t miss this rare chance to witness a breathtaking display of ballet artistry and Ukrainian culture.
