BLUMENTHAL ANNOUNCES 2010-2011 TICKET SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Charlotte, NC – The North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center will soon begin the second year of a special two-year ticket scholarship program. The program’s purpose is to enable selected financially challenged families in the Charlotte area to experience the thrill of top quality, traveling Broadway shows and to learn more about the performing arts in general.
The ticket scholarships are made possible by generous gifts from the Duke Energy Foundation, the Doctor Family Foundation, Target and The Broadway League (the national trade association of the Broadway industry and founder of the national Family First Nights® on the Road program).
The three productions chosen for this year’s program are all part of Duke Energy’s Broadway Lights Series: WHITE CHRISTMAS, IN THE HEIGHTS and SHREK THE MUSICAL. In addition to receiving highly discounted tickets, each family will participate in special pre-show activities presented by the Blumenthal’s Education Department and post-show Q&As with cast members and production personnel from each of the shows.
Prior to show dates, participating families will receive show packets containing study guides and a booklet with information about the performing arts in general and the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
The Blumenthal has set aside 550 tickets for this year’s ticket scholarship program. Families, whether it’s a single parent (or guardian) with a child or larger families, are eligible to participate. In addition to providing an opportunity for underserved families to attend critically acclaimed Broadway productions, the program will create an opportunity for families to create wonderful memories.
Five community organizations will select participating families and oversee logistics regarding transportation to respective Blumenthal theaters: ACE Community Learning Centers, Latin American Coalition, Communities In Schools, Community School of the Arts and Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte.
“It’s very rewarding to be part of an effort that promotes and encourages family adventures and the performing arts,” said Ralph Beck, Director of Education for the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. “The Center is pleased to play a significant role in helping build a culturally-rich community by making high-quality performing arts programs accessible to as many families as possible.”
