Dec 21, 2016 / Press Releases

Blumenthal Performing Arts and Carolinas HealthCare System are joining together to make Twyla Tharp’s 50th Anniversary Tour, coming to Belk Theater Feb. 25, broadly accessible with most seats priced at only $10.

“This is an amazing dance company performing the celebrated work of its founder, world-renowned choreographer Twyla Tharp,” said Blumenthal President Tom Gabbard.  “Charlotte theater fans know her work well from the Broadway hits Movin’ Out and Come Fly Away, which played here as part of our Broadway seasons. Her choreography has had a major influence in both the worlds of dance and Broadway, and we are thrilled that Carolinas HealthCare System is assisting us in offering this very low ticket price. We understand that ticket prices can be a barrier to attendance, and we hope this special pricing will allow everyone who is interested to enjoy this extraordinary performance.”

This is the first event in a new Blumenthal initiative dubbed “Blumenthal Celebrates.”  Working with sponsors, Blumenthal hopes to identify other exceptional performances this year and offer special ticket pricing through the program.

The $10 seating for Twyla Tharp 50th Anniversary Tour will be general admission.  A very limited number of reserved seats priced at $20 also are available for the show, but more than 95% of the tickets are only $10.  They can be purchased online at BlumenthalArts.org or by calling 704.372.1000.

Preludes and Fugues (2015), one of the pieces slated for the Charlotte performance, received rave reviews from critics. The New York Times says, “Unmistakably the work of a master. There is so much in (the piece), so much life.”

Nine Sinatra Songs (1982) presents a glamorous portrait of seven couples that traces the arc of romantic relationships. The dancers swing, swirl, tango and cha-cha through a glittering ballroom. Nine Sinatra Songs is one of Tharp’s most frequently performed works and has become a mainstay in the repertories of professional dance companies worldwide.

Since graduating from Barnard College in 1963, Twyla Tharp has choreographed more than one hundred sixty works: one hundred twenty-nine dances, twelve television specials, five Hollywood movies, four full-length ballets, four Broadway shows and two figure skating routines. She has also written three books. She received one Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, nineteen honorary doctorates, the Vietnam Veterans of America President's Award, the 2004 National Medal of the Arts, the 2008 Jerome Robbins Prize, and a 2008 Kennedy Center Honor.
