Blumenthal Performing Arts Helps Keep Arts Alive in Area Schools

Feb 21, 2011 /

Charlotte, NC – Blumenthal Performing Arts Education Department is teaming up with MOMIX: Botanica for several educational activities the week of Feb. 21.
MOMIX: Botanica will perform three school shows, Wednesday-Friday, Feb. 23-25, at 10 a.m.  A total of 21 schools – nearly 3,500 students and teachers – will be attending, including around 15 home-schooled families.  Free tickets were offered to 44 Title 1 Elementary Schools with nine schools taking the offer.  Remaining schools paid $5 per ticket, reduced from $20.
Between Jan. 12 and Feb. 17, Blumenthal’s Education Department created a free workshop for participating schools developed by Brian Coons, a Science and Lab Specialist at Barringer Academic Center, to prepare the students to see MOMIX: Botanica.  The 45-minute workshop was for grades K-5.  It contained both science and movement elements with four 10-minute sections representing spring, summer, fall and winter.
The workshop was presented to seven Title 1 Elementary Schools, thanks to an almost $3,000 grant from the Arts & Science Council that Blumenthal Performing Arts matched.  A total of 79 classes – nearly 1,900 students and teachers – took part.
