Get to Know the Show event for African Children’s Choir

CHARLOTTE, NC – The community is invited to an afternoon of music and an opportunity to learn more about the AFRICAN CHILDREN’S CHOIR, in preparation for an upcoming performance by the AFRICAN CHILDREN’S CHOIR at the Knight Theater.  The Blumenthal Performing Arts Center’s Education Department is hosting a free “Get To Know The Show” demonstration for AFRICAN CHILDREN’S CHOIR on Thurs., Mar. 11 at 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Wachovia Atrium.  The afternoon’s programs will feature local artists, Jermaine Nakia Lee, Michael Porter, and Ranata Wingo whose presentations highlight the elements of a capella, unison and harmony involved in choral singing and a demonstration on versatility of the voice.

With brilliant native costumes created in bright, bold colors, and using native drums and other ethnic instruments, the choir captivates with its children's songs, energetic spirituals, and popular gospel tunes. Nominated for a Grammy Award in 1993 (under the "Best Gospel Choir" category), the group has recorded for major motion pictures and performed last year on American Idol Gives Back with Josh Groban. The choir’s 25 to 30 performers, consisting only of children ages five through twelve, are selected for their talent from thousands of hopefuls in impoverished areas of five African countries: Kenya, Sudan, Uganda, Nigeria, and Rwanda.
