What’s up next:

The winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, “Kimberly Akimbo” (playing April 15 - 27 at Knight Theater) is about a teenager trying to navigate a new school, her first crush, a dysfunctional family, and a rare genetic disease that makes her age 4 ½ times faster than normal. Kim’s determined to experience life to the fullest, even though she’s short on time, and she’s got a quirky new set of friends ready to help her no matter what.

Community Cue - Conversations Inspired by the stage

What’s happening:

At this Community Cue lunch and learn series, enjoy a free box lunch as you hear directly from two cast members about the show. North Carolina natives Darron Hayes (Martin) and Marcus Phillips (understudy for Seth, Aaron and Martin) will talk about the show and life on the road. Hayes attended high school at UNC School of the Arts and recently graduated from Penn State. Phillips is originally from Hickory and attended Studio School in LA.

Themes:

A big part of the show focuses on the six teens (Kim and her friends) who all feel like outsiders and they want, more than anything, to be “seen.” Host Arlethia Hailstock, Blumenthal’s community impact manager, will chat with special guests Hayes and Phillips about whether they had similar feelings as teens and how they found success in spite of—or because of—not fitting in.
